Book 1. Gage
Chapter 1. Gage
I sit out on my parents back porch and watch my brothers play football. Today is my mother's fiftieth birthday and we are celebrating, the way the Windwalker family always does. We gather at my parent's house for a barbecue and either play football or card games. All these men in one place can be crazy.
From an outside perspective we seem like an ordinary family. There is nothing ordinary about us. We are all Psions. Psions are what we call ourselves. We are a race of people with special abilities. We each have a different gift. Mine is healing. My brother Aaron is Psychokinetic. He can move objects with a thought. My mother Leah is Psychic. My Grandfather used to call it Walking the Veil, when you are able to walk the veil between this world and another. She will have visions of the future.
My father Degan is a Psychometric. He can touch an object and know its history. I have five brothers and one sister. Girls are rare as Psions. My father looks at it as a blessing upon our family. I joke and call her a curse, but we all adore her. Jenna is the youngest and the heart of the family. My brothers are Aaron, Dagger, Forest, Talon, and Graham. I already told you about Aaron.
Dagger is a pyrokinetic, or a pyro if you prefer. Forest can talk to animals. It helps a lot when we have a missing persons case. Talon has aerokinesis. He controls the wind and air itself. My youngest brother shares my fathers ability and Jenna walks the veil like mom, but is also an empath.
It may seem strange to you but for us it is completely normal. We do not use our abilities every day. For most of us it is a choice unless we are under a lot of stress. For the most part we are like everyone else only we just have a bit more. While growing up, my parents encouraged us to hone our talents and our house could be crazy at times. That is why we always gave sufficient notice if a friend was going to visit. It would have been a huge shock for someone walking into floating objects or my brother hurling fireballs outside into a fire retardant target.
Another strange thing about us is our dating style. We have all dated but we never have serious relationships. We didn't have boyfriend or girlfriends like everyone else in school did. We have only one true love. We meet the one and we psychically imprint on them and they on us. It is hard to explain. I haven't met my one yet, so what I know is hearsay. My father says you know immediately when your eyes meet. He says it's as though something inside you clicks into place. Usually your one will be human, but sometimes it's another Psion, like my mom and dad. Female Psions are rare, so typically it is a human and therefore difficult in the beginning. It is difficult to explain our gifts to someone who has been taught not to believe in the unexplained. Most Psions look forward to finding the one meant for them, because it is said that only then is a Psion truly balanced.
My brother Graham is not one of them. He is the biggest player. My mom keeps telling him if he continues in his ways he will have the most difficulties with his one. She will never trust him and trust is key for the union to work. He will not listen. I tell him all the time that when his time comes we will all remind him how he would not take our advice.
I'm not in as big of a hurry as Aaron is. Aaron is the oldest and just turned thirty. The first three are a year apart but Forest and I have three years between us. Then two years between the last three. I am a typical middle child. I am not the center of attention nor do I want to be. I am quiet where as Dagger and Talon are loud. Talon and I are as close as the oldest three are, and we all adore the baby. Graham is a bit of a loner but a lot of that is because we disapprove of his behavior and he refuses to grow up. Jenna says what we see is not always the way things are. She must know more
then the rest of us. Maybe she had a vision. I hope she is right because if there is one of us who needs his one the most, it is Graham.
I don't look forward to Jenna finding her one. I cringe just thinking about it. I know, I am just being a protective brother. The poor guy will have five of us to remind him to behave. I almost feel sorry for the guy. Nope, not at all.
My parents are very loving and they have always had a open door policy. I didn't always like that when I was a teenager, but now I love it. At times they still act like teenagers. I remember us telling them “gross” all the time. Now I find myself wanting what they have. My mom clears her throat to get my attention. I did not notice her sitting down next to me.
“I walked the veil last night.” She says squinting from the sun. I didn't say anything, just waited for her to continue.
“It was of your one.” The tea I was sipping sprays out my nose as I cough. She laughs as she pats my back.
“You will be meeting her very soon, son.” She says as she continues to pat my back until I am fully recover.
“What is she like? What is her name? Where will I meet her?” I spit out in one breath.
“Relax, son, I would not tell you even if I knew. It needs to be natural, but I will tell you this, she will have no trouble accepting you, but she does not trust easily. You need to be patient son.” I swallow twice before I can talk.
“How soon mom? I'm taking Jenna and her friend Sarah out to the Blue Moon tonight, to dance.” I didn't want to go, but Jenna begged me. Her friend constantly hitting on me. I have told her repeatedly that I am not interested. She keeps thinking I will change my mind. Who knows, if I was human I might have been able to, but she is not my one and I refuse to lead a girl on. No matter how beautiful they are. The last thing I need is to have Sarah all over me when I meet my one and have her think I am taken. My mom is shaking her head.
“Don't dance with Sarah and you make sure she understands that you will never be anything to her.” In other words I will be meeting my one tonight. Excitement courses through me at the very thought. I have often dreamed of what she would look like. How she would feel in my arms. Aaron comes over and overhears the tail end of our conversation.
“Do you want me to come and dance with Sarah so you can be unencumbered?” I smile at Aaron. Always the big brother.
“That would be great. I will owe you one.” I say with a smile. Mom winks at us.
“Yes, you'll want to dance with Sarah.” She said, narrowing her eyes a bit. I catch on, but I don't think Aaron does. Well hell, it looks like my brother will also meet his one tonight. I don't know how those two haven't already met. She has always been joined to Jenna's hip. Aaron ran back to join the others playing football again.
“Is Sarah his?” I ask. Mom giggling as she walks away is her only reply. I start laughing too. Aaron will be excited. He has been struggling lately and I know it is his impatience. He is ready to start a family. He and Dagger were the ones that actually started the company we all work at. Windwalkers Inc. It is a security company, that does some detective work for the police department, when needed. Being able to see the future, talk to animals and throw fireballs, well that makes us all uniquely qualified in a way no one else could be.
My sister joined us after graduating from college. In just two years I might add. She is as sharp as a tack. Hell, Graham just joined us as well. I turn back to mom and grab the plates from her hands.
“It's your birthday. No cleaning for you.” I kiss her cheek and start cleaning. I do the dishes and then join my brothers for a quick game. The afternoon festivities tapers off and I have never been one to rush out the door at the end of family functions. Tonight I am.
I rush home and take a quick shower. I am so excited and nervous. It takes me more time than normal just to decide what cologne to wear. I shake my head. I need to stop over thinking this. I give myself a pep talk and head out the door, only to rush back in and change into the blue shirt I had originally picked out. Finally I leave to pick up the girls. The girls will have to be on their best behavior tonight because I have a feeling I will not be much help if they have problems. My hands are sweating.
I wipe my hands on my pants as I pull up to Jenna's house. Sarah is ready but Jenna is on the phone having a heated debate.
“You two go on I will just meet you there.” She says as she covers the bottom of her cell phone. Great. At least it gives me the opportunity to have a talk with Sarah before we get there.
Chapter 2. Ashley
I am having the worlds worst day. First I'm late to class because my car won't start and I end up getting my first B. I am not happy about it. I have to ride the bus, so by the time I make it to the restaurant for work my shift had been given away.
I sulk the whole way home, only to walk in on my boyfriend having sex with the neighbor. The neighbor who said I could do better and that I should break up with him. More like she has wanted me to break up with him to make way for her. Too bad she didn't wait. I was about to break things off anyway, just as soon as I found another place to live. Looks like that got moved up to priority one.
I call my friend Beth and she says I can stay with her until her boyfriend (who is a minor league baseball player) finishes his season. I have two weeks. Great. I pack , as Gary, from here on out to be known as the ex, follows me around begging me to stay. I was never home anymore, he misses me, blah, blah, blah. Do they always have such stupid excuses? It was all my fault . I was being neglectful. I finally lost it.
“Pick up the damn phone then. Say “hey Ashley I miss you” or “hey Ashley you need to spend more time with me”. No, you just jump in bed with the neighbor, and blame everyone except the one who is to blame. It is you, not me.” I back away when he steps toward me. I turn my back to him and quickly finish packing. I go into the bathroom and gather all my toiletries and make-up. I double check that I have everything and then remove the key from the chain and hand it to him.
“Enjoy the neighbor.” I smile sweetly as he sputters. I walk away. I should not feel relief, but I do. Does that make me a bad person? I don't care. It had gotten to the point where I can not stand his touch. Even a touch on my shoulder repulses me. He is a good looking guy and was sweet in the beginning. I know I share some of the blame, but even as the relationship eroded I never would have cheated on him.
I arrive at Beth's apartment and unload my stuff in the spare room. I do not bother unpacking. She is waiting in the living room.
“Spill it.” She says. No, how are you? No, what's been going on?
“Ugh! I came home and he was fucking that pretentious neighbor in our bed.” She is stunned a moment.
“Shut the door! The one with big fake boobs and bottle blonde hair?”
“Yep, that's the one.” I laugh. I know I'm no super model, but he definitely downgraded.
“That is sick. I wonder if those things even move.”
“Seriously, get off the fake boobs.” I giggle.
“Hey, It's a valid question. I thought you were about to break up with him anyway?”
“I was. It was just gross to witness and insulting. My self esteem took a hit.” Beth laughs.
“Well we need to celebrate your freedom and have some sexy men buy you drinks. Maybe some body shots and lots of flirting will help your self esteem.” She claps her hands as if this is one of her more brilliant plans. I go along with it. If nothing else I can use a drink.
We arrive at the club at seven and go straight in thanks to Beth. It pays off having a semi-famous boyfriend. It also doesn't hurt that Beth is hot. Beth's short spiky blonde hair and large blue eyes make her look like a pixie. It's a great look on her. I look ridiculous with short hair. I tried it once in sixth grade. It was a horrible year of wearing hats. Never again. I have long black hair and what my mom always called “whiskey colored eyes”. I have darker skin due to my Native American ancestry.
My mother was full Cherokee and my father was Irish. My father was killed in a con
venience store robbery and my mother never recovered. My mom was six months pregnant with me when he died. He went to the store to get my mother the ice-cream she craved. Since it was late, it was all that was open. He was shot through the heart when the robber got nervous and accidentally pulled the trigger. He died immediately.
Mom nearly lost me while mourning over him. I remember as a child hearing her every night as she would cry herself to sleep. I tried not to ask to many questions about him because it hurt her. I was raised on the reservation with my mother until I went away to college. My mom made it to my graduation from high school. Unfortunately she only lived another week. She had Glioblastoma, it is a very fast growing and inoperable brain cancer. She fought it for two years but it finally won. I miss her every day. She was a pillar of strength to me for so long. She did not have an easy life and I know she still mourned my father. She never married again. She must have loved him greatly and could never move on. I had always secretly wished she would have found someone and had more kids. I always wanted siblings.
We sit down in the VIP section and order drinks. I could get used to this. We have a couple appletinis before hitting the dance floor. I'm shaking my ass to the beat and enjoying the rhythm. I lift the hair off the back of my neck and put a little swirl in my hips.
I feel him before I see him. It's the strangest sensation I have ever felt. My heart starts racing, the hair on my arms stand up and a shiver races up and down my spine. I turn as if I am a heat seeking missile and zero in on a man standing at the end of the dance floor.
It's as if though the entire crowd disappears and it is just the two of us. Wow. Intense. I want to walk up to him and run at the same time. My mind and body are at war. I am just standing there as though I'm frozen until he walks toward me. I should leave. This is far too intense for me, but I can't move. Our eyes lock and that's when it gets even more strange, if that's even possible. It is as though a peacefulness comes over me. A calmness that I have never felt. It feels so good but I don't understand it. How can one person I have never even met make me feel this way? I do not even remember being in my mothers embrace being this peaceful. I shake my head to try and make sense of all this. This is all so strange. He stops right in front of me.
